Unicorn herd grows to 1,000 for first time: Here's 13 NEW Ones from Bay Area.
The unicorn population explosion shows no signs of slowing, as the number around the world grew to 1,000 for the first time this week.
Thirteen new ones from the Bay Area so far in 2022 helped run the aggregate worth of the global herd to $3.3 trillion, according to a report from CB Insights.
"What we saw in 2021, when the number of unicorns created grew by 70%, is by almost any stretch of the imagination, going to be an outlier year," Brian Lee, senior vice president of intelligence at CB Insights, told the Business Journal on Thursday.
The average number of new unicorns born around the world in each of the previous five years was around 100, Lee said, and before that it was about 40 to 50 a year.
"Last year, we averaged around 130 or more in every single quarter," he said.
